Unit 5 Discussion
Quinn’s Reflections on CIS150 and CIS151:
I believe that the information we have covered in CIS151 (and its prerequisite class, CIS150) is elemental to understanding certain aspects of computer networking which many people (including some in the computer networking field) take for granted. While I realize those of us who have come into this class with a fairly decent understanding of networking might feel that this class may be “busy work” until we get to more “advanced” topics, I must point out that there are still things those of us who already have this “skill set” should learn from this class (I know I certainly learned more than just a thing or two!) But, of course, maybe some of us have forgotten that this is an “Introduction to Networking” course; we’re supposed to be covering the basics of that topic (with a course name like that). I hope those of us who already considered ourselves “skilled” in computer networking topics realize (especially for those of us who learned a lot about the topic through self-education) that things we can and should learn in this course will lay a great amount of “groundwork” understanding for future things we will learn in our courses of study.
Personally, I know that I gained a lot of knowledge in this class in the area of WAN connectivity. While I thought I knew quite a lot about the various types of available WAN connectivity options, the materials in this course both corrected me on a few things, and added a lot of new information to my “knowledge base.” I also was very pleased to have the opportunity to learn about older networking technologies (especially ThickNet/ThinNet/Token Ring), which my age somewhat precluded me getting to use hands-on. Hopefully, those of us who are here (primarily) to reinforce our knowledge and gain certification in technology and scholastic achievement will realize that if I can learn this much from a early-on course like this, that you need to keep your mind constantly open to more.
In closing here, I would like to thank all of my classmates for your great interaction in this course. As always, it has been quite a pleasure getting to know, work, and learn with all of you. :-)
Thank You!
–Quinn
